Gastric Sleeve or Lapband Sleeve? Choosing the Right Weight Loss Surgery for You

There are a variety of weight loss surgeries available to the modern patient. Each has its own level of invasiveness (or otherwise) and comes with its own benefits and costs. With the caveat that anyone considering gastric surgery should talk extensively and in detail with their GP or a qualified consultant before making a final decisions, here are some pieces of information that should help outline the difference between two of the most common the gastric sleeve and the lapband sleeve.
The major difference between a gastric and a lapband sleeve is the degree of reversibility involved. With a gastric type sleeve, the operation is completely permanent. It involves some cutting and stapling of the stomach, which, once done, is done for life. The lapband option, on the other hand, can be totally reversed at any time making it perhaps a more ideal choice for a wider range of people. As with any form of surgery, the reasons behind the surgery will determine the need or otherwise for a reversible procedure.
The gastric sleeve works by cutting out a large portion of the stomach, leaving behind a sleeve shaped portion of the whole. The technique permanently restricts the space a person has available for filling with food, and is as such designed to induce a feeling of fullness quickly.
A lapband sleeve has much the same effect. The effect in this case, though, is achieved by placing a band around the stomach, which can be removed at any time. Effectively the stomach is tied off to create a smaller stomachic area meaning that patients again feel fuller quicker, but have none of the possible post op issues associated with cutting and stapling operations to worry about.
In addition to the lack of possible seepage, or post op infection, which can be caused by a cutting and stapling operation like the gastric band procedure, the lapband sleeve operation is the least invasive of all the gastric surgeries. A simple laporoscopy is used to place the lapband around the stomach the end result of which is a greatly reduced recovery time and a significantly smaller amount of post operative pain.
Another advantage to the lapband is its propensity for easier further adjustment. A lapband can be inserted and then incrementally tightened as part of a gradual weight loss programme. While the gastric band surgery cuts the stomach down to a pre determined size and keeps it that way forever, the lapband sleeve can be used to first slightly restrict a person s appetite, and then gradually to train that appetite down to normal through incremental tightening of the band.
Both forms of gastric surgery indeed, all forms of surgery carry certain risks associated with the introduction of foreign bodies to the internal anatomy. As with any surgical procedure, both gastric sleeve and lapband sleeve procedures should only be carried out where a genuine need is present.
